[S]ome updates from Salamanca, Spain!
One of the interesting things I got to experience during my time here was Semana Santa, or Holy Week. During the week leading up to Easter there are many processions that take place throughout the city at varying hours during the day, and this is one of Salamanca’s (and Spain’s) most important celebrations. I’ll attach some pictures of the various processions. I haven’t travelled much outside Spain save two weekend trips to Portugal, but I have travelled quite a bit throughout Spain. During my spring break, I went to the north of Spain to visit San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander and Oviedo. Some highlights were the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, the great views from the top of a mountain in San Sebastián, and pre-Roman churches in Oviedo. I’ll also include in this email some pictures of the cathedral and the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca. I spend a lot of time walking around here and taking in the beauty of all the buildings! The Plaza Mayor is believed by many to be one of the most beautiful plazas in Spain. Overall, I am really enjoying my time in Spain. I certainly have experienced culture shock, but I love being in a place where I can speak Spanish all the time. It is also interesting to take classes at the Universidad de Salamanca and learn more about the Spanish education system (which is very different from the United States)!
