The Department of Anthropology celebrated the launch of Susan Terrio‘s new book Whose Child am I? Unaccompanied, Undocumented Children in U.S. Immigration Custody on Thursday, June 4th in the Baker Scholars Conference Room. The event began with an introduction by Dr. Denise Brennan, followed by remarks from Dr. Terrio, and included readings from the book by her granddaughter Sydney.

Whose Child Am I looks inside a vast, labyrinthine system by closely following six youths, starting with their arrest by immigration authorities, placement in federal detention, appearance in deportation proceedings, release from custody, and, finally, ending with their struggle to build lives in the United States. It shows how the government got into the business of detaining children and what we can learn from our troubled history.
